Expert Consultation on Preparing for Your Mare's Foaling

When the weather is mild

This week I'm only working two nights. I still have one to go.

A few of the ladies are overdue as we work off a 399 day gestation not a 345, and I have noticed the weather has an affect on Pop-time. The foal is the ultimate one to decide when to be born, but Mum can have some influence to exactly when.

There have been stories of foaling being born during storms. I even had one the other week do that. Most of my lades hate the frost and crispy nights and the are the ones who wait till morning. What surprised my last night was that a few of my girls were exhibiting "I'm ready" - waxed teats, low pH, relaxed vulvas, but NO, they were just relaxing during the mild and wind-free night.

One girl too a chance and produce a plane big colt. She hit the 365 day gestation. Both were going well when I left them this morning.
